IEM Shanghai is set to take place on August 1-6. Since this takes place during the player break, we won’t be seeing the world’s elite teams taking part. However, the stage does shine some spotlight on the underdog teams from around the world, especially those from Asia.
5 out of the 8 teams that will be attending this event have already been announced. They include Gambit, NRG, Virtus.pro, Hellraisers and TyLoo. The final 3 slots will be filled through China, Asia and ANZ (Australia-New Zealand) qualifiers.
With 4 out of the 8 teams attending originating from Asia, this is a good chance for them to test their mettle against reigning European and American teams.
All qualifiers have a similar format
Open qualifiers will start with a single elimination format, where bo1s will be played up till the semi finals. Semi finals will be bo3.
Both semi-final winners will advance to the Closed Qualifier, where they will fight against 6 invited teams.
The closed qualifier will have a double-elimination bo3 format. Only one team from the closed qualifiers will earn a spot at IEM Shanghai.
The schedule for the qualifiers is as following
